Raising Anti-Racist Children: A Dialogue and Reflection
for Latinx/Chicanx Communities
is a panel discussion which will provide you with knowledge on the origins of racism and colorism in the Latinx community, and how internalized oppression has negatively impacted our mental and emotional well-being as parents. Our conversation will end with a powerful reflective exercise on examining our own biases and will challenge us to take action to raise children grounded and rooted in love, justice and liberation!

Leslie Priscilla Arreola-Hillenbrand of @latinxparentingLeslie Priscilla Arreola-Hillenbrand is a first generation non-Black Chicana mother to three biracial children ages 8, 2, and under 1. She is a descendant of Indigenous Tarahumara Rarámuri and Spanish lineages who resides on occupied Tongva and Acjachemen land, also known as Orange County, CA. Formerly an early childhood teacher and 1:1 behavioral coach, Leslie has worked with children and families for over 13 years. She has coached & facilitated groups in both Spanish and English for hundreds of parents in schools, transitional homes, teen shelters, drug rehabilitation centers, and family resource centers throughout Orange County, CA. Leslie shares her medicine by offering coaching, workshops, support and advocacy for Latinx/Chicanx families locally, nationally and internationally via her organization Latinx Parenting. Latinx Parenting is a bilingual organization and movement rooted in children's rights, social and racial justice, the individual and collective practice of nonviolence and reparenting, intergenerational and ancestral healing, cultural sustenance, and the active decolonization of oppressive practices in our families.
Dr. Maricela Becerra of @academicmamiDr. Maricela Becerra is an assistant professor of Spanish and Latin American Literature and Culture at CSU Channel Islands. Her research focuses on State violence, trauma, and memory in Latin America. Dr. Becerra specializes in contemporary Mexican social movements and social justice.
Dr. Kendra Flores-Carter, DSW @drkendraflorescarter
Dr. Kendra Flores-Carter is a Published Author, Professor of Social Work at California Baptist University and a Researcher in the Social and Behavioral Sciences field. An advocate for social justice and change, she has dedicated her career to help bring awareness to disparities in healthcare experiences and various issues affecting women and children.
A former Medical Social Worker for over 10 years she was tasked to provide services to children suffering from trauma related to child abuse and women experiencing significant life crisis such as Intimate Partner Violence, Substance Abuse Complications, Incarceration, Homelessness, and Mental Illness. Dr. Flores-Carter holds a BA in Psychology from California State University, Dominguez Hills, an MSW from California State University, Long Beach as well as a Doctor of Social Work degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Dr. Flores-Carter serves as the Co-Chair of the Inland Empire Maternal Mental Health Collaborative and is the current President of Postpartum Support International-California Chapter. Dr. Flores-Carter is also the founder of the Janet Don’t Cry Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing education, support, and resources on mental health globally.
Dr. Flores-Carter current research interests includes examining social determinants of health factors, adverse trauma, and disparities that impacts maternal health outcomes for Minority women. Additional interests includes exploring Minority women’s attitudes towards seeking mental health services and the use of Christian mindfulness meditation for the reduction of anxiety and depression symptoms.
Locally, nationally, and internationally, Dr. Flores-Carter has presented her research, served on health expert panels, and facilitated workshops on mental health and wellness, child abuse prevention, enhancing maternal mental health care in hospitals, and cultural humility. Dr. Flores-Carter is also an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Omega Delta Omega Chapter in San Bernardino County.
