This course is designed for Chicanx/Latinx professionals in mental health fields: Social Workers, MFTs, Counselors in both private or public sectors. Associates welcome.
Through self-reflections, discussions, case studies, and embodied practices, this training is designed to develop and strengthen clinicians' awareness and knowledge of their "Cultural Self" in relation to their therapeutic work with Xicanx/Latinx individuals and families.
Culturally Centered Therapeutic Interventions – Syllabus
🌿 Wednesday, October 2nd – Who are my ancestors and why does that matter?
-Explore how culture impacts therapists' identity and its implications for clinical practice.
-Embodied decolonial practice – ancestral healing ways through earth-based teachings: fire and earth.
🌿 Wednesday, October 16th – Who am I becoming? What is my medicine?
-Clinical reflections of internalized oppression, implicit bias, values, beliefs, power, and privilege.
-We will explore and practice decolonial ways of processing and moving through this new self-awareness, feelings coming up, and new paradigm shifts emerging.
-Embodied decolonial practice – ancestral healing ways through earth-based teachings: water and air.

| Emilia is founder and clinical director at Corazón Counseling Service and Yollotl Cuicatl Coaching & Guidance. With over 20 years of working in the mental health field, Emilia has been a longtime advocate for culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health services for the Latinx/Chicanx community and has worked with various social justice organization and community-based mental health agencies. Emilia highlights the importance of culture, ceremony and ritual throughout the work she facilitates, incorporating aspects of traditional indigenous wisdom and modern psychotherapy techniques. In addition to her psychotherapy practice, Emilia provides community training and workshops on various topics related to maternal mental health and facilitates rites of passage ceremonies from puberty to motherhood. Emilia is also a cultural practitioner and ceremonial Aztec dancer, living in harmony and connected to the land and elements of nature, being in ceremony every day, guided by her ancestors.
